Allow me to inform you about the current state of most nipple gels on the market. Currently, most breastfeeding women are given a lanolin based product to help relieve their sore, cracked nipples. As you may know already, lanolin is an animal based product—100% cholesterol—
and created from sheep that graze on grass treated with pesticides. Several studies from JAMA have demonstrated that there are residual pesticides in lanolin containing compounds in spite of purification by the manufacturing company. Lanolin is also dark, greasy, and is malodorous. It stains undergarments of breastfeeding women.
Another important warning—lanolin is not kosher because it is an animal product which should not be combined with breast feeding.

Appreciate you sharing, great blog article.Really looking forward to read more. Really Great.
I used this product and liked it a lot. I used it to replace an organic nursing balm that I absolutely loved. My pediatrician was concerned that if I used it while breastfeeding however (which I had hoped to do since it seemed to really help my milk production) there was a risk of the baby reacting to it if the baby developed allergies to nuts, due to its containing coconut oil.
Sincerely,
Mary Miller
Beaute de Maman nipple gel contains an omega 3 fatty acid base, great for brain and eye development, calendula officinalis, a natural herb well know for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiinflammatory properties to prevent mastitis, and vitamin E–an antioxident which helps heal dry, chapped skin.
Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch as I found it for him smile Thus let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
Dr. Brown,
Are you able to direct me to research-based articles related to pesticide warnings with use of purified lanolin products for breastfeeding mothers. There has been some debate on this topic at our local hospital, though I have not found current research-based articles as you have described.
I truly appreciate your feedback and would like to get the most current information available, but I do need research-based articles. Do you have articles on the safety of your product, as well?
Thank you for your time, Iris DiMaggio, RN, IBCLC
Dear Iris,
Thank you for your blog post. Research based articles regarding pesticide residue in lanolin were posted in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association, Jan 13, 1989 Vol 261, No.2
The letter to the editor is entitled Pesticide Residue in Lanolin by Dr. Sheldon Wagner, Cynthia Copland, PharmD, and Marsha Roebel, PharmD
In this letter you will see a chart listing an analysis of the pesticides and their percent detected in lanolin from products currently used on the market today.
I quote directly from the article,”Pesticide residue in lanolin is of concern to all of us, especially in the findings of the organophosphate pesticides chlorpyrifos and dimpylate and the organochlorine compounds alpha and beta BHC and DDE.
It seems unnecessary knowingly to apply toxic chemicals directly to the skin, and in the case of breast fed infants, to directly feed toxin to a baby via the lanolin present on the sore nipple.”
This article has 3 other references which you can also review.
Hope this helps.
